Give the devil his due: Al Sharpton does the right thing

Rev. Al Sharpton wants investigation into rape allegations by Megan Williams, who is recanting story

Shades of Tawana Brawley.

The Rev. Al Sharpton revealed Wednesday that he gave a $1,000 Christmas gift to a black West Virginia woman who claimed she had been gang-raped by a group of white men - and is now recanting her story.

Only this time, Sharpton wants cops to investigate whether Megan Williams "fabricated her story" and the convicted men sprung "if they are being held under false information and she misled authorities."

Williams, 22, told cops in 2007 she escaped from a ramshackle trailer near Charleston, W.V., where she was held captive for a week - and where she was raped, tortured, and forced to eat her own feces.

Seven suspects pleaded guilty, and all but one are now serving long jail terms.

In a statement, Sharpton said he visited Williams after her horrific story broke and gave her some of his "personal money" after her supporters told him "she had no resources for Christmas."

Sharpton said that when Williams' lawyer notified him that she was changing her story, he immediately wrote to West Virginia prosecutors, asking them to "vindicate any wrongfully convicted individuals."

Williams, who now lives in Columbus, Ohio, is expected to speak at a press conference later Wednesday.

Brian Abraham, the former Logan County prosecutor who oversaw the Williams rape case, told the Associated Press he was mystified by her change of story.

Abraham said the attackers - all of whom had lengthy rap sheets - were convicted on physical evidence and their own statements.

Sharpton was a vocal supporter of Brawley, a black teenager who made what turned out to be bogus claims - more than two decades ago - of being kidnapped and raped by a group of white men.

Despite a grand jury ruling that declared Brawley's explosive allegations a hoax, her family continues to insist that she was raped and brutalized.

Brawley, who has since changed her name, later converted to Islam and moved to Virginia.

I have been trying to find Al Sharpton's contact information. I do think he would help us. Anyone know?

This is always welcome news, but I get the feeling this has to do with the money she got from him. Is he going to call for Crystal Mangum (and Ashley Todd!) to be prosecuted?

Thank you for the post, however... Let's be very careful with the Devil name calling. This site should be objective and informative! Please don't fall into the trap of tabloid hate words, or this site becomes useless. Our opponants do this all to well. Al Sharpton was wrong years ago, but he has helped Black people here and abroad within his civil rights lifetime. Devil name is not helpful or accurate. Black women have been raped in slavery and Jim Crow South so many times that your head would spin. He is from this racist era. Thank God times are changing. Oh, I spent 3/12 years in prison over a false rape, wrote a book and started a non profit for this cause... Google me-

Many black men were also lynched due to the false rape accusations of white women.

Sorry to hear of your false imprisonment. Welcome to the blog.

They should have known something was fishy when the girl claimed to have eaten her own feces. Human shit has a deadly bacteria in it...she wouldn't have been around to complain to the police if it had really happened.

Kumbe, I am assuming there is a cultural or language barrier, but to "give the devil his due" is a common expression that emanates from Shakespeare, if not earlier, and is used not to signify that someone is Satanic or inherently evil or an actual devil. Rather, it is commonly used to signify that someone who generally opposes you has taken a correct position in a particular instance, and should be credited for it. To read more into it bespeaks a hypersenstivity that has no place on this site.

I am sorry to say that, for whatever good he's done for black people, prior to this matter, Al Sharpton proved to be no friend of falsely accused men. Unfortunately, if you view the world through a gender prism as the feminists do, or a race prism, as some persons like Sharpton do, it will eventually hurt falsely accused men who don't happen to be the "correct" gender or race.

This, of course, in no way minimizes the historical atrocities committed against black men and boys at the hands or white men after white women falsely cried rape against them. Those atrocities must not be forgotten and we should teach our young people about them.

But those atrocities can't be used to justify modern day injustices, either.

Such wrongheaded thinking was prevalent in Duke lacrosse. I even posted a horrific quote from a young black male who thought it was OK that the three lacrosse defendants suffer -- not because they were guilty but for historical atrocities against blacks. Never mind that the three young men had nothing to do with those historical atrocities. For all this young man knew, the three defendants might have been staunch supporters of blacks. I pointed out that the feminists would be almost as happy to see that black young man suffer for alleged historical atrocities against women -- just because he was born male. So where does it end?

I'll tell you where it ends: how about each of us examine every case on its merits and treat each individual with justice and dignity, regarless of his or her race or gender?

But, please, please, let's not give someone who is no friend of the falsely accused a free pass just because of the color of his skin.

Welcome, Kumbe.

I followed the link from your site to Amazon.com, but, unfortunately, your book is currently unavailable. Do you know when it might become available?

Also, now that you've found this site, take the time to look over the multitude of known instances of false rapes that Pierce And Steven have covered here, and consider adding this site to your list of links.

From your site (with the AFA Chapel prominently displayed), I'm wondering if you are in some way connected to the large false rape scandal that occurred at the Academy?

Perhaps you might share a bit of your story with us (a good chance to "tease" your book), as such stories serve quite well to educate others both to the dangers and the injustices out there.

Oops!

After taking a closer look at Falserape.net, I see that you do have a link to this site as well.

I have followed Kumbe Ginnane's story for a number of years, as well.

There is a TERRIFIC archived article about his in Denver's Westword magazine Screwed For Life http://www.westword.com/2005-08-18/news/screwed-for-life/3. I wrote the letter to the editor titled "No Way Out". His accuser has a rebuttal letter as well.

I saw Ginnane's revocation story on the news in 2001, the same morning my son was being evaluated by an 'expert' when his 'therapy' team recommend prison for his "failure to comply with treatment".

The same woman who had just recommend prison for Kumbe Ginnane was evaluating my son at that very moment. I couldn't get up from the floor for hours I was so terrified.

I remember your mother's cries, Kumbe. I cried with her - I too am the mother of a falsely accused son.

This isn't a black against white issue. White men are targeted for false accusations as much if not more than black - especially child accusations.

This isn't a gender war - women have been falsely accused and done hard prison time. White women.

I think it's a grave mistake limiting this issue as a race issue or gender issue, rather than the larger all encompassing issue of injustice.

SgtMom isn't really an MRA but she plays one on TV.

SgtMom isn't an MRA in any circumstance. SgtMom isn't a feminist either.

SgtMom is a human rights advocate.

In the long run, it doesn't matter if it was "he" or "she".

And it's certainly not a matter of black vs. white.

It's what's right or wrong that really matters.

you're thinking of Sgt. Bilko or whatever his name was.

"It's what's right or wrong that really matters."

That's what feminists say, but what they mean by it is, "what women do is right, what men do is wrong. Therefore, we should treat women right and men wrong."

Please, post that "legal documentation" proving that your son's prosecution and daughter's rape aren't just convenient attention-getting fantasies.

She did that before, apparently thinking that we're too stupid to read and understand them. Sorry hon, but we're used to spotting and discrediting women who make stuff up.

Yeah, SgtMom, your gig is up... you cannot fool the Troll. He's got us all figured out.

All you have to do is read a few of Troll's posts to know that he's probably the most intelligent man on this blog, and always "sober".

Oh, and I'm not a "troll." I'm one of the guys who belongs here. You're the troll who is here to waste everybody's time and get attention spewing your bullshit.

Well, actually Atom, I WAS rather flattered my Anonymous heckler believed I had the wherewithall to 'make up' documentation with obvious knowledge of legalese.

I posted a Findlaw entry about my father's manslaughter case from the 1950's.

I never claimed to be a genius, but didn't realize the enormity of my lack of intelligence until confronted by the legal system.

That 'Anonymous' thinks I'm smart enough to fake that posting shows how 'smart' he is.

You notice no one with legal knowledge has proclaimed that post to be fake.

The sad part is, Anonymous attacking me is nothing new. I have undergone some VICIOUS attacks when writing about false accusations.

I just never expected that reaction from others who were falsely accused.

My son's accuser would be very pleased...

kumbe ginnane is typical of self hate race identity...has he forgotten how many african americans fought for his innocence both financially and physically, ...how dare he think it is o.k. to join up with ignorant baiting against mr. sharpton who has done nothing but stand for fairness and justice for african americans who keep getting the short end of the stick..wake up!
