The New York Times pointed that the poster was obscure until long after World War II. "It was not widely seen until the early 1980s, when it was embraced by feminists."
It is altogether fitting that the poster became, as the Times said, "a symbol for the American feminist movement," because, if truth be told, the poster doesn't depict reality. It is the artistic musing of a gifted illustrator.
While the image has become the symbol of the empowered woman, ready to take on a man's world and do anything a man can do while flexing a defiant, sturdy right arm, in real-life, Ms. Doyle's daughter Stephanie Gregg revealed that those weren't her arms: "She didn’t have big, muscular arms. She was 5-foot-10 and very slender."
The most distinctive aspect of the image was doctored.
And while the poster conjures up the image of women happily breaking free of their domestic enslavement and capably performing manufacturing jobs vacated by conscripted men without missing a beat, according to the New York Times, the real life model "quit the factory job after about two weeks because she learned that another woman had damaged her hands while using the metal presser, and she feared that such an injury would prevent her from playing the cello."
The real-life "We can do it!" model actually is more representative of American women -- and more "empowered" -- than the tough-as-nails woman presented in the illustration. Unlike men, who rarely had the luxury of voluntarily quitting a factory job due to fears of injuring themselves, and unlike Ms. Doyle's same-age male peers who were entering the deadliest war in world history (some of her male high school classmates had already been killed in action), Ms. Doyle had the luxury of quitting a job lots of men would have killed for, going to work in a soda fountain, and falling in love with a young man who would become a dentist.
Moreover, it is fitting that this poster has been heralded as a symbol for American feminism because devotees of the latter also paint a picture of their movement that doesn't exactly match reality.
While they claim they are all about gender equality, they happily fight for inequality when, for example, they oppose shared parenting by invoking the nastiest stereotypes about men as abusers.
They talk of equal opportunity but are really after equal outcomes, so they dishonestly insist that the gender pay gap is a product of discrimination.
They correctly insist women have a right to be as secure in their safety as men (but ignoring that men are victims of violent crime far more than women), then they dishonestly paint a picture of our college campuses as cisterns of male predatory sexual violence.
And never mind all those other little things where the genders are decidedly unequal but which their movement has precisely zero interest in even discussing: the life expectancy gap; the suicide gap; the workplace injury and death gap; the gap where men lead women in 14 of the 15 leading causes of death; the funding gap for gender-specific diseases; the criminal sentencing gap; the college enrollment gap; and the literacy gap. And if you mention any of them, you're "whining."
"We can do it"? You already have.

On a related, but more serious note, it tells us something about our society that a major news daily like The Philadelphia Inquirer would write something like this: "Three female icons of World War II also passed into peace: Miep Gies, 100, a Dutch woman who helped hide Anne Frank and her family; Geraldine Doyle, 86, the model for Norman Rockwell's famous "Rosie the Riveter" poster; and Edith Shain, 91, who said she was the nurse getting kissed by a sailor in the famous photo of VJ Day celebration."
This is not intended to detract from Ms. Gies' efforts, but to talk about Ms. Doyle and and Ms. Shain, whose claim to fame was that they had their photos snapped by news photographers, as "icons" of World War II, doesn't just trivialize the unfathomable sacrifice of hundreds of thousands of others in that monumental clash, it smacks of mockery.

Men and womens equality feminism at least had as its pretext "mens and womens equality".
New "Gender feminism", is fighting a whole different battle than the "equality feminism" of yesteryear.
Even a cursory glance at the rhetoric of modern day "gender feminism" vis a vis, the "equality feminism" of just 25 years ago, one would see substantive differences in their overall approach and Agenda.
Were already witnessing a backlash of sorts from classical "equality feminists" . One example of the backlash is(I-feminists); that feel the new "Gender / raunch feminism", barely resembles what their earlier sisters fought for.
That is one phenomena that is not discussed here enough; The growing Fault line between "Equality feminism, and new "American Gender / Raunch feminism".
If I never see "gender raunch" or "raunch feminism" again it'll be too soon.
As for the topic: Rosie the Riveter really has nothing to do with modern feminists, who no doubt would have worked to undermine the war effort and would have complained unceasingly about stepping aside and allowing the boys to have their jobs back after they came home. She is indeed a symbol of expanded work opportunities for women, but feminism is about lies and entitlement, not opportunity and shared sacrifice.
Boycott poster,
Please stop. You have been spamming sites all over the place with that same entry. If you are interested in a link echange, then email us, and we'll consider it. But stop spamming everyone with that same post, over and over.
Thanks.
For anyone not sure what I'm talking about, I removed the post, that is being posted around the man's sites, like clockwork.
Sorry, that should be the men's sites, no man's sites
Interesting post about the contradictions about the way "feminism" is portrayed in the US media - which seems to have arisen out of the current Wikileaks controversy: 1) the federal government effectively infiltrated and smashed the real feminist movement, just as they did the civil rights movement, the anti-war movement, the student movement, and the militia movement and 2) the angry, arrogant, anti-male stereotype feminists enjoy in the mainstream media is mainly the one the US government created for them.
Unfortunately the US intelligence role played America's feminist poster girl Gloria Steinem is still largely invisible to the vast majority of Americans. In 1976 Steinem blocked Random House from publishing details about her CIA past (see http://www.mail-archive.com/ctrl@listserv.aol.com/msg02217.html). A great pity - as its publication might have changed history for American women. Betty Friedan, the founder of NOW, publicly confronted Steinem for deliberately sowing dissension and trying to break up the organization. Steinem also very effectively used Ms magazine to create massive divisions between professional and working class feminists and between feminists and progressive men.
More recently evidence has surfaced about an FBI operation she ran to plant so-called "black feminists" in grassroots African American groups to break them up (see http://rah.posterous.com/black-feminism-the-cia-and-gloria-steinem-fwd). I ran across some of these nasties in Seattle, while working to set up an African American Museum. I write about it in my recent memoir: THE MOST REVOLUTIONARY ACT: MEMOIR OF AN AMERICAN REFUGEE (www.stuartbramhall.com). I currently live in exile in New Zealand.
Speaking of spammers, this Dr Stuart has been peddling this crap all over MRM blogs as well.
On the BAW blog: it's obviously a false flag/feminist parody.
And on the off-chance that it's not, it sucks anyway. Uninteresting and poor rhetorical discipline.
Modern feminist politics is based on the somewhat paradoxical notion that women can be equal to men via chivalrous entitlement programs and discrimination. It is a bit like having a sporting contest where one player is forced to play with a large handicap, the other player wins, and then everyone is supposed to cheer them on, saying "my, what an excellent player they are!".
For example, if we expand the level of societal redistribution of resources from men to women via various means (government programs, affirmative action, education system, frivolous lawsuits etc.), then women may be more able to get by without a man in their lives. But we can then pretend that women are doing it all on their own steam, and laud women for being so strong, independent and self-reliant! And gee, aren't men such a pathetic bunch of losers, who feel threatened by these kick-ass women!
It is a bit like playing a game with a small child, saying 'let's pretend you are a big grown-up, and can be whatever you wish. And can do it all so much better than I can. But don't worry. I'll be here to catch you if you fall'. In a sense, this is all just a game where we are supposed to flatter women's egos and indulge them in the belief that they are more capable and independent than their natures and biology will ever really allow most women to be.
The truth is that women can only have real influence in society so long as most men are chivalrous enough, or at least acquiescent enough, to let them. This is something that pisses feminists off no end. As the blogger Polish Knight puts it, "a little girl can only hit Daddy with Daddy's permission".
Of course, sooner or later this delusion must come to an end (rather sooner in the event of serious economic problems). We cannot forever sustain the fantasy that women can have it all, Santa Claus can pay the bills, and we can pretend women are doing it all because they are so brilliant.
Sure cupcake, you can do it. Put in more OT!
And Dr Stuart, your assertion that there was an original, altruistic, benevolent, untainted feminism that somehow got corrupted along the way is pure nonsense.
As far as I'm concerned, the rot had already started back when women were first allowed to vote. When the bra burning bitches arrived on the scene, they merely hastened the process.
Feminism is a pernicious evil which must be repudiated and eradicated. There is no such thing as 'good feminism' or 'moderate feminism'. Gender equality is a hoax and men are always superior to women. No exceptions.
Thanks for working to promote sexism by painting all women as manipulators who are coddled and shown favoritism by flaunting their sexuality. I'm all about putting out the truth about both women and men, but part of that truth is that not all "feminists" are how you portray them. Many of us just want to be left alone to do our jobs, and not looked at as freaks or suspects. As one of the few female programmers, I've had advantages in school, and disadvantages at work. Both are the result of sexism. I'd prefer that neither existed and that I could find work based upon my talents alone. However, sexism continues in the attitudes of many of the men I've worked or gone to school with, who ignore my knowledge and experience as a software engineer, and instead regard me as someone who is "faking it" and looking for a free ride. However, I don't wish to paint all men (or even the majority) as being this way, although a great many people of both genders working in IT are certifiable jerks. I think that you should keep talking about *the facts* in regards to women and men. But I'd appreciate it if everyone stopped pushing the idea that women in general are looking for an unfair advantage, because this just holds all of us back by justifying sexism and disadvantaging those of us who want to be looked at as individuals, not as a group. IT is one of the few fields where men and women should be objectively equal, but there are so few women in it (due to negative attitudes about their involvement that stem from both genders), and we're still treated like we're just here for entitlements or to find boyfriends. Sexism exists, it's disgusting, and saying that women *want* it to exist (through gaining unfair advantages) is just hurting those of us who honestly just want equality. Please, think of the possibility that you may have a daughter some day. Would you want her to grow up in an environment with men regarding her as a manipulator who uses her gender and sexuality to gain favors, the way a prostitute might? Look at the men who are commenting on your blog, what they say about women, and think of how they are using this blog to justify their mindset, and how this will be used to promote sexism in the next generation.
Anon,
Pardon my french, but too fucking bad. You don't like the stereotype? Then maybe you need to get off your ass and call those feminists on the bullshit they peddle in your name.
See, guys don't care anymore about who is "really" about equality, because you have to prove yourself to us. Not the other way around. The majority of men commenting here, have been falsely accused. And you have obviously don't care, as I don't see you apologizing for the actions of your sisters.
Please, think of the possibility that you may have a son some day. Would you want him to grow up in an environment with women regarding him as a means to get attention, or simply to get out of trouble, by using her gender and sexuality to cry rape falsely? Look at the women who are commenting on our blog, what they say about men, and think of how they are using this blog to justify their mindset, and how this will be used to promote sexism in the next generation.
See sweetheart, that works both ways. I'm done dealing with bigots like you. Fuck off.
To Pierce and all of our regular readers:
My apologies for the outburst and language. But false rape apologists like her, piss me the fuck off.
And I'm done being nice.
Dear Mzzz Feminist:
How would you feel about a man who couldn't care less about male on female rapes? Pretty bad, right?
Focus on that feeling. Allow it to grow as strong as you can bear.
Now imagine that you are a man. As a man, you have come to realize that there are very few women who care about the problem of false rape claims. Still imagining you are a man, recall that nasty feeling I asked you to focus on before. That's how you are feeling right now about the majority of women. You are starting to see women as extraordinarily callous for preferring to see 1,000 men falsely imprisoned than have one true rapist go free. You are starting to realize how utterly selfish most women are. You are seeing how cowardly it is of women to cheer on their feminist sisters when they are promoting atrocities.
Okay, you can go back to being you now. But, dear god, try to become something other than a wretched monster.
Wow, Anon, I would have thought that you, as a software engineer, might know a little bit about spacing. That single, long paragraph makes your post a little hard to read. That said, I am extremely short of sleep, which doesn't help.
"Many of us just want to be left alone to do our jobs, and not looked at as freaks or suspects."
And in that those of you are no different to the men who comment here. But most of these gents haven't been given that. Instead, they've been ripped from their homes on the word of some skanky, lying little whore and tossed in the slammer. Often for no good reason, with no proof of guilt, no assumption of innocence.
THAT is why this blog exists. To give THEM a voice. To hear THEIR stories of horror and abuse at the hands of those who don't deserve their freedom. To help them heal from the trauma of being accused of a heinous crime that they DIDN'T COMMIT.
Women in general ARE both looking for and getting unfair advantage, and for so long they now see it as normal and the status quo, and start scweaming when you try to cut them back to actual equality.
I think that one thing gets overlooked. The anon feminist keeps mentioning that she was upset that she had advantages and disadvantages because of her gender.
Leaving aside the possible or existing sexism, did you complain about it when you were enjoying the advantages? Or did you start complaining only when you discovered the disadvantages?
Also, it would be foolish of ANYONE not to take advantage of a strength. Good-looking women always know that they can get favors/drinks/etc from most men, and take advantage of that. There is absolutely NOTHING wrong with that.
Hey, E,
I call everyone on sexism. It's amazing that you assume that I don't, and I think that speaks to your own biases. You sound like you're asking for favoritism and excuses for bad behavior based on prior persecution of your gender.
Sounds kind of like what men accuse women of doing, doesn't it?
Also, I never said anything about rape. I honestly don't care about the issue. Anyone can plainly see that I never addressed it.
I'm talking about the people that attack women as a gender. I think you would do well to try to be as calm and rational as men are said to be, and actually read my statement, instead of reaching for something that isn't there. Also, I did not defend the actions of women on ANYTHING. If you actually read my statement instead of PMSing and flying off the handle at what you *wanted* to see there, you'd notice that I pointed out the negatives of both men and women in regard to certain subjects, and that I did not praise women for *anything.*
My only purpose was to point out that your blog is a den of senseless bigotry that you excuse with a past-victimhood mentality, and you seem to be fine with that. I don't see anything wrong with having a blog discussing rape or false accusations, and I did not criticize that.
Perhaps we've all learned today that men AND women are guilty of a lot of the same mistakes.
"How would you feel about a man who couldn't care less about male on female rapes? Pretty bad, right?"
I'm going to stop you there, because you're just making wrongful assumptions, particularly that I'm defending false accusers or outraged about rape or blah blah blah.
Honestly, I don't give a shit about rape either. It exists. Lots of people get raped. Lots of men don't care. BFD.
Innocent people are jailed for stuff every day. Do the prosecutors get punished for putting innocent people behind bars? Rarely.
Lots of people are wronged every day. Most people are evil. Those of you trying to fight injustice, good for you. I'm trying to fight injustice as well.
And, yes, I have pointed out that people receiving scholarships based upon gender or race are receiving unfair advantages. I never accepted one. But I realized that people of my race and gender are given an advantage in school, and I pointed that out while in school. Thanks for not making unfair, biased assumptions, and saving your condemnation.
First of all I would like to say I think your 'false rape blog' is a brilliant idea. And the fact that you say women can also get accused of false rape: not making an anti-women site and seeing both genders can be accused and be perpetrators.
Yet, this iconic WWII poster has got you all angry with women who are trying to defend themselves and what the poster represents. OK I'm not saying lie down and agree with what all women are saying, but for a blog that's supposed to be an equal site, free for woman and men who have been accused of false rape, it just seems to go against what you are trying to aim for.
Your intro to the blog states about the cases, not women this men that, but on equal terms. you said to one comment that most of the men commenting here have been accused of false rape. But, if you site is geared towards men AND women, couldn't the possibility that the women are also been accused, or know of some woman been accused? As you say, it is women just as much as men.
If you disagree with me, PLEASE don't tell me to fuck off, or that I piss you right off.
I just thought this blog was equal for men as well as women.
You say:
"Hey E, I never said anything about rape. I honestly don't care about the issue." WHAT WHAT WHAT??????? You come on a false rape society blog and say you honestly don't care??? Then sprout on about feminist rights and your 'gender.'
You also say
" My only purpose was to point out that your blog is a den of senseless bigotry that you excuse with a past-victimhood mentality, and you seem to be fine with that." your ONLY purpose!!!
GEEZ are you sure, not want to rip their hearts out while your at it! Talk about giving feminist a bad name!
These men (women) have been WRONGFULLY accused of the most hateful thing you can do to a person, probably by someone they thought they could trust, then they get stained by the label. It stays on their record of, I think, a couple of years? (correct me if wrong)Their livelihood gets destroyed, their friends and family don't trust them all because that someone they thought they could trust accused them.
This is not the place to sprout on about feminist this and that!
I thought this would be a site where men and women come together in false accusations of rape, combine their stories and try and change the law or make people aware of what's going on.
Trust needs to be established and you calling their blog: "a den of senseless bigotry that you excuse with a past-victimhood mentality", which is possibly the only place they can get together and talk safely about their terrible experience, does not help - LEAVE IT ALONE haven't they been accused of so much already?
